Cool March…How About April’s Temperatures?

If you know anything about me, you know that I love numbers especially temperatures. After this abnormally cool March, the flood of temperature data is begging to be charted and compared to other Marches similar to this one.  So that’s what I did.

Averaging all of the highs and lows for every March day through the 28th since 1871 yields this chart. Notice that this March is nowhere near the coldest. In fact, its the 35th coldest. March of 2005 was colder overall.

march_temps_28thSo how about April. I checked the March years that were colder than this year and did a composite of what the Aprils looked like that followed. What I found isn’t real good!  Keep in mind that this is only a STATISTICAL COMPARISON NOT A DYNAMIC ONE. ITS NOT A FORECAST! I didn’t weed out or add any atmospheric variables that exist this year versus in the past so don’t take this too literally. That said, its an interesting map; one that we will need to watch in the upcoming weeks.

april_compositeIf this holds true, expect highs to stay in the 50s and 60s with some stretches of mid 40s throughout the month. Let’s see what the actual pattern brings!
