CLEVELAND — Before long, visitors at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo will be able to ride tigers, zebras and other endangered animals.
The zoo plans to build a carousel with 64 hand-carved wooden animal figures and two chariots.
A contract was approved this week to allow Carousel Works, Inc., of Mansfield, Ohio, to build and install the attraction.
It will be constructed in the Savanna Ridge area, where there is already a playground and event tent.
A pavilion will house the carousel and a nature play zone will be added to the area.
Eventually, an event rental space may be built nearby.
The entire project is expected to cost $2 million and should be finished in the spring of 2014.
The Cleveland Zoological Society has committed to raising the money through private fundraising efforts.
